Working Document for the Caswell county records for mainly Thomas' second family. It includes tax , censusm and land records
A Nicholas Rice sells land in Albemarle in 1 Jan 1763 but living in Louisa. He shows up in another couple of minor records in Louisa over the years. He says the land he is selling he inherited from Nicholas Mills Sr. Many interpret that to mean Thomas Rice Jr 's wife Jane is Jane Mills daughter of Nicholas Miles Sr and Nicholas is their son. Date wise it is possible Nicolas is the son of John Rice Jr/Sr as the maiden name of his wife Mary is unknown also/
Thomas Rice Jr names just his eldest children in his will except Nicholas who may be deceased as now records are found of him in the late 1700s. The children listed under his second wife Abigail are determined through deed records.
Thomas Sr gets several Hanover Land Patents on both sides of Cub Creek and Dirty Swamp, bounded by the lands of Col. David Meriwether, David and William Meriwether, James Goodall, and Richard Brooks. Most of the Hanover records have been burned up but one surviving land record gives his wife's name as Joyce. Some of the land is in Louisa Co. Those records include a reference to the destroyed will in Hanover of Thomas Sr dated 2 Apr 1744. His executors were : William Rice of Louisa and Thomas Rice of Hanover. Later deeds identify Thomas as Thomas Jr including one 1 Jan 1752 listing Thomas Rice Jr and wife Jane selling more of the land. They lived in Hanover but have several entries in the Louisa Co land records as some of the land was in that county. The last of the Louisa Canada West entries is 1759. Some time before 1777 it is assumed they moved to Caswell Co where he already owned land in the 1777 tax list. The name of his daughter Joyce's assumed to be because of his mother's name as its unusual which supports this placement. But a Y-DNA test if he has any Rice male descendants would be helpful.
William Rice of Louisa is presumed a son as he is executor in Thomas Sr's will. Thomas Sr's brother William has been dead many years so the William executor is likely a son. William stays in Louisa Co and appears consistently in the tax records both land and personal property. He had at least one son William Jr who appears in the tax records. A James appears in the Personal Property tax only shortly before William dies and is there several years after but he does not appear to take over the land tax so its unclear if Jams is related.
Thomas Jr last Louisa record is 1759 and of course there are no Hanover (where he actually lived) records of that time. He moves to Orange/Caswell by Feb 1764 when his purchase of174 A of land from Luke Lea is registered. His cousins the Harts have been in Orange/Caswell County for several years and are very active in buying and selling land. There is no detailed deed (just a record of the land transfer) but Luke Lea got a land grant of 174 A on Countyline Creek. On the same court date of his transfer there is a land transfer for John Rice of 625 A purchasing from William Morrow. But there is no Land Grant of that size to say where so it is located or if this is John Rice Sr. In 1777 in Caswell's first record in Oct James Rice has 174 A and Thomas over 981 A. It is likely Thomas sold his174 A to his cousin James as it is a unique size. Other Orange county records in that period include a Robert Rice and a Nathaniel Rice but each have only one minor mention and there is not way to tell if they are related. Thomas is a witness on a coupe of deeds after his purchase. The deed register stops in 1768 and only a few deeds before 1781 survive the destruction of the deed book during the Revolutionary War.
