   1. He was educated at the College of New Jersey at Princeton. Although most people were in his area were Episcopalian he became a Presbyterian. He served as minister in Hanover 1762-66. He then served in Bedford Co VA. During the Revolutionary War, Rev Rice served as a chaplain and orator to the Hanover militia. He one of the founders of Hampton-Sydney College for men - the second oldest collage in the south. He was a trustee along with Patric Henry, James Madison, and others. In his 50s he moved to Kentucky. He was a strong Abolitionist. He was was a participant in the State Convention to write the state's constitution. He is known as "Father Rice" and Patriarch of Presbyterianism in Kentucky" He wrote many papers and a memoir and founded a Collage and Seminary

   1. He was a lawyer. His son David who tells us the name of his uncles and some details about 3 aunts as well as naming some of his great uncles.
   2. Son David fouught in the battle of Horseshoe 1814 & New Orleans. He got several tracts of land in Lick Creek TN. He was a Justice. He was a suveyor 52 years.
   3. Both his sons were famous Prespeterian mininsters and educaters like his brother David. Both were at Cub Creek Church in Charlotte Co were John operated a school. John then moved to New Bern, and then in Raleigh to set up schools.Benjamin was at Buffalo Church in Guilford Co NC and then Raleigh. He eventually set up a church on NY. Eventuallly he became pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Princeton. Both retired and died at Hampden-Sydney College in Prince Edward Co. An all male scholl which is still active today.

10. ???? Many trees have Mary Rice b. 13 Oct 1732 Hanover m. 1745 James Garland Sr. d. 1812 Albemarle VA as a daughter of David. Although she is clearly a Rice it is unlikly she is a daughter of David. It is unlikely David had 2 daughters named Mary. Mary Rice who married Edmund Haggard is a daughter indicated by her nephew David Rice son of Benjamin. David says David Sr had 4 daughere but gives no clues for the 4th. She may have not married or may even have died young. Mary Rice Garland has no sons called David. Her location in Albemarle with other Edward children and having a son named Edward make it more likely she is a daughter of Edward. But she is listed as a question mark.since it is not known for sure.

• David did not keep slaves as he felt they were not worth the effort. His wife was opposed. Most of his sons had no slaves or very few. Rev David was an Abolitionist.
• Much of this information comes from a letter from David Rice to his granddaughter Lou C Rice 30 Apr 1863 .David was son of Benjamin Rice and Catherine Holt and grandson of David Rice and Susannah Searcy. Only excerpts are given.
  • "Thomas Rice left nine sons and two daughters. My father told me the names of them all, but I have forgotten some of them. There was John, David, Matthew, William, James and Benjamin.
  • First: Thomas Rice was my great-grandfather. He emigrated from England, being of Welsh extraction, and settled in Hanover Co., VA. An estate was left him in England, and he went back to look after it, and never returned. The ship was supposed to have been lost at sea. Thomas Rice left nine sons and two daughters.
  • Second: David was the name of my grandfather. He married Miss Searcy, and had six sons and four daughters: Jesse, David, John, James, William, and Benjamin, the youngest. Some of my father's uncles remained in Virginia; some of them went to Caswell Co, North Carolina; some went to Union District, South Carolina.
  • Third: Benjamin Rice, my father, married Catherine Holt. They had three sons and three daughters, David, John, Benjamin, Edith, Sallie and Elizabeth.
  • Fourth: David married Mary Paxton and had six sons and four daughters that lived to be grown: George Duffield, Samuel Montgomery, John Holt, Ann Morton, Elizabeth, Margaret. Now take the direct line from Thomas Rice and you have David, Benjamin, David, George Duffield.
  • One of my father's sisters married a Mr. Saunders in Virginia. Two married men by the name of Haggard and went to North Carolina. Rice Haggard, a cousin, was a Methodist preacher and was a man of considerable ability as a preacher. "
• So we know the names of the 6 sons and can deduce 3 of the 4 daughters. We know who specific men are for David, Benjamin, and William B as identified in the various writings by the sons or grandsons. So the task is to find the correct Jesse, James, and John who belong in the tree. The circumstantial evidence for placing these specific James , John, and Jesse under David starts with looking at Caswell Co NC mentioned in the grandson David's letter. Caswell Co NC is a hub of Rices thought to be grandsons of Thomas and Marcy. Of these we know James and John Rice (son in law of John Rice Sr) are brothers. We know James has a descendant who has tested positive to group for Thomas and Marcy Y-DNA Rice group 4. We also know James wife Alice Hix (Hicks) had a sister Judith Hix (Hicks) who marries the included Jesse Rice. We do not know if James and Jesse are 2 brothers marrying 2 sisters but there is more circumstantial evidence that they are 3 brothers and their father is David and Susanna Searcy.
  1. There are many John Rices in Caswell Co. This John is the son-in-law of John Rice Sr. John Rice Sr and others are in St David's district and John and James are in the Gloucester district but on the same road going along the south fork of Countyline Creek which traverses both districts. In a road work order and in a tax list several years later John is labeled as brother of James to help identify him from the other Johns. Their land shared a common boundary.
  2. We know James belongs in the Thomas Marcy tree based on a Big Y-DNA test by a James descendant.
  3. John names his first child Susannah and second David. Jesse names his first son David and a daughter Massy. James does name his children based on the Rice family names except perhaps his son Jonathan is named after his brother John. The names of James' children link to his wife's family.
  4. David's daughter Mary Rice and her husband Edmund Haggard lived on south fork of Countyline Creek in the 1770s-1780s *Grant Deed) before moving to KY. Caswell court records show Edmund moving to KY and leaving a power of attorney in Caswell to 2 of his sons once he was in KY. They were in St. David District and James and John in Gloucester District. But they are all on the south side of Countyline Creek and the district line runs through the Countyline Creek which traverses the district line.
  5. William B applied for a Logan Co Land Grant shortly befoe James' sons did. William B though did not get it surveyed and followed through but instead choose Mercer Co KY to live.
  6. This Jesse Rice Sr marries Judith Hix sister of James wife Alice Hix. Jesse Sr and his sons David and Zephaniah stay in Hanover along with 3 of the 4 daughters with at least the males dying in Hanover. His son Jesse Jr lives there until at least 1810 or 1811 around when Jesse Sr dies. Jesse Jr then moves to Campbell Co VA where is mother's Hix family have moved. As a resident of that county, he buys 100 acres of land for 100 pounds 3 Nov 1813 from his aunt Sabra Hix Morris. Judith Hix's sister Sabra Hix(Hicks) married Joshua Morris and had no children. She was extremely wealthy and names her sisters and many nieces and nephews in a multi-page detailed will. The will plus deed records we know the names of Jesse and Judith's children as well as children of Alice and James Rice listed under James Rice above. Jesse Rice Jr applies for a Revolutionary War pension in 1832 in Campbell. He says he does not remember his age but thinks he is about 75 and he was born in the upper part of Hanover. He says he served in the militia in Hanover 1778, 1779 and 1781 and gives details on his battles..
     • Hanover deed records have all been destroyed except a few parish records in 1733-5. What we do have are land tax and personal property tax records which helps tell approximate birth and death dates for the sons. .
       • Land Tax: Nathaniel Rice 212 acres 1782 -1801. 1801 lists a convenience to Obadiah Stanley. Charles Rice 1787 -1800 has 43 3/4 - in 1801 no listing. Jesse Rice Sr 782-1812 120 acres and in 1813 David Rice 70 acres and Zephaniah Rice 50 acres. Presumably Jessie Sr has died.
       • Personal Tax St Paul's parish: Holman Rice 1782, 1784, 1785 Petitioner only, Nancy 1794-5, Samuel 1798-1800
       • Personal Tax St Martin's parish: Only Jesse's family. The records list the number of white men over 21 in a household and then slaves. Jesse never had slaves. Jesse 1782- 84 3 adult men. 1785 It spells out their names Jesse and sons David and Jessie Jr over 21 and Zephaniah under 21. 1786 can't read 1787 all 4 are individually listed and over 21. 1788 -1796 4 adult males, 1797 Jesse has 3, 1798-1800 back to 4, 1801 Jesse 2, 1802-1806 Jesse 2 and Zephaniah 1 - it is likely Jessie Jr is living and working elsewhere and David is included with Jesse as the eldest son and inherits the most. 1807-1810 Jesse Sr 2, Jesse Jr 1 , Zephaniah 1 David is likely counted with Jesse Sr. 1811 David 1 Jesse 1 Zephaniah 1 - not sure if the Jessie is Jessie Sr or Jessie Jr, 1812 and on David 1 Zephaniah 1, So likely Jesse Sr died in 1810 or 1811 since as the Jesse in 1811 could have been either. Jessie Jr next appears in Campbell Co VA in the purchasing land 3 Nov 1813 and is already a resident of Campbell Co 1813.
